I wrote this for a charity I played for, and performed it the night of writing it, combining vocal ostinati to layer while learning how to loop, as well as trying out new chord combinations on the guitar. Are we helping the community around us? We never know when we’ll be riding smoothly or when things will fall apart and we will need help. Many thanks to Elinor, Greg and Zachary for making this song so special.
lyrics
They were flying high, top of their game. Disaster struck, no one to blame/ They needed help and help it came, pulled them through the flame.
He was really low, rock-bottom hard. He couldn’t see inside the dark./ A hand appeared out from the far. The help it warmed his heart.
Pay it forward when you can. The load is lighter with a helping hand/ You don’t know when you’ll need the help, my friend.
So pay it forward. ‘Round that circle of giving again.
She would give all that she had. Time it turned from good to bad./Love poured out from the cracks, she fell back on many hands.
Everything was running fine, until it wasn’t, hit a mine./ Searching for a lifeline. One cruel game of search and find. (Chorus)
We all need some help sometimes, it’s not always good. It’s not always fine./ We all need some help sometimes. Let’s work together you and I. (Chorus)
You don’t know when you need the help. Step on up when you’ve got the chance.
There are others who need our help. Got it worse, in poor health./ We can share abundant wealth, turn the focus off ourselves.
There are children in hospitals, recovering through it all/ We can help them big or small. Let’s hear this call… (Chorus)
Forward, pay it forward. Forward, pay it forward..
You don’t know when you need the help. Step on up when you’ve got the chance.
We all need some help sometimes, it’s not always good. It’s not always fine.
We all need some help sometimes. Let’s work together you and I. (Chorus)
